COMPUTING

I passed the following two part-time courses at the University of Southampton, New College, The Avenue, Southampton SO17 1BG
   - Introduction to C programming
This unit is an introduction to what programming is and how to do it. I went through phases of the software development cycle, from defining the problem to maintaining the program using C as the learning language. Top-down design has been covered as a method of producing well structured robust software. Practical work involved programming exercises in C, exploring some common programming algorithms and problems.
   - Computer Networks
This unit covers the main principles of computer networks: why they are necessary, the nature of networks, topologies, physical construction, advantages/disadvantages; network operating systems, local area networks, wide area networks; communications protocols network management and services. Practical work included setting up LANs and servers.

HPVee / Labview (Graphical Programming Language)
I obtained a good working knowledge of HPVEE and Labview programming.
The softwares were used to control instruments and to store the measured data in the computer to be displayed, saved, or graphed for future use.

COMPUTER HARDWARE AND ARCHITECTURE
I built up my home PC on my own. I am constantly delving inside my PC, installing, maintaining and upgrading system elements.

WINDOWS OS
Origin, Mathematica, Sonnet (simulation software for RF devices), Autocad, Powerpoint, Word, Frontpage, Photoshop, Macromedia Flash

WEB DESIGNING
I am teaching myself HTML programming and web-page development, using Macromedia Flash, Photoshop, Microsoft Front Page, Ftp software.
I designed the following web-pages:
- http://www.phys.soton.ac.uk/super for the Superconductivity and Magnetism group of the University of Southampton.
- http://www.phys.soton.ac.uk/msl  for the Scientific Network "Network on Magnetic Superlattices".
- http://homepages.nyu.edu/~jmb22   my personal web-page.
