Thesis title: Engineering the magnetic properties of epitaxial RE-Fe2 Laves phase alloy and multilayer films
The project was conducted in collaboration with Oxford MBE Laboratory (UK), and funded by D.E.R.A (Defense Evaluation and Research Agency), recently renamed QinetiQ, and based at Farnborough (UK).
I investigated the magnetic properties and transport characteristics of multilayers of the cubic Laves Phase DyFe2 and YFe2. The samples were produced by Oxford MBE Laboratory (UK). Magnetic measurements were made using a 12T Vibrating Samples Magnetometer, and also a 6T SQUID. Magnetotransport measurements were performed on a 16T rig, and on a 30T magnet at the High Magnetic Field Laboratory (Grenoble, France). In addition, Neutron reflectometry measurements were conducted at the International research Centres: ISIS in UK and the Laue Langevin Laboratory (ILL) in France. The neutron reflectometry technique enabled to determine the magnetic configurations of the superlattices. It has been highlighted that DyFe2-YFe2 multilayers witness extra magnetic moment due to the formation of magnetic exchange springs in the YFe2 layers.
The main achievements of the PhD project are:

modelling of magnetic exchange springs in the YFe2 layers,
tailoring coercive field by adjusting the thickness of DyFe2 and YFe2,
engineering multilayer films with negative coercivity, and
observe GMR up to 30%.

I spent the final year of my degree at the University of York (UK), as part of the European Exchange program (Erasmus).
3rd Year Project: The project involved the study of a GMR-structure placed under microwave radiation as a function of an applied magnetic field. A granular ferromagnetic thin film structure was investigated to test the feasibility of measuring Giant magneto-Impedance. A significant amount of time was spent on eliminating stray field earthing effects.
